Principle of Operation:
The purpose of the BNWAS is to assist the Duty Officer of Watch (OOW) during the night. The master of the vessel will set a time interval between 3-12 minutes and activate the mode to ON or AUTO before returning for rest in the night.
When the OOW does not reset in the stipulated time dedicated, the alarm will enter into sequence of Stage 1, 2 and 3. This will ensure that the OOW is executing his duties and not leaving the Bridge post in the midst.
Stage 1: Wheelhouse indication & audible alarm
Stage 2: Captains cabin and officer indication & audible alarm
Stage 3: Crew and common indication & audible alarm
In accordance to IMO Resolution MSC.282(86):
- New building cargo ships of 150 gross tonnage upwards and passenger ships irrespective of size constructed by July 2011.
- Existing passenger ships irrespective of size constructed before 1st July 2011, not later than first survey after 1st July 2012.
- Existing cargo ships of 3000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed before 1st July 2011, not later than first survey after 1st July 2012.
- Existing cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 300 gross tonnage constructed before 1st July 2011, not later than the first survey after 1st July 2013.
- Existing cargo ships of 150 gross tonnage and upwards but less than 500 gross tonnage constructed before 1st July 2011, not later than first survey after 1st July 2014.
